Q2. Why should I apply to UWC?
A2. UWC schools and colleges offer life-defining experiences for young people. We help them to discover the possibility of change through courageous action, personal example and selfless leadership. This holistic approach to education helps the students to flourish – physically, intellectually, emotionally, spiritually and ethically.
Our success is not just measured in terms of academic achievements or job titles. We assess our impact, also, by looking at how UWC alumni contribute to the local, national and international community. Q5. What extracurricular activities are offered at UWC?
A5. Our schools and colleges offer lots of activities, far beyond the requirements of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
We believe that physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle are integral to a young person’s development. For example, Pearson College and Changshu China offer a range of water-sports and Atlantic College specialises in lifeguarding. Other schools and colleges provide mountaineering and environmental activities.
Community service is a vital part of our education because we think it helps young people to develop a sense of social responsibility and become involved in the area in which they live. Activities are diverse but can focus on:
- The environment, such as recycling and biodiversity
- Community, including literacy, tutoring and supporting refugees; and
- Campus life, such as working in the library or learning first aid

A6. National committees set UWC apart from other international schools. They are made up of volunteers in over a hundred countries around the world.
The groups select students for our schools and colleges using a range of methods and activities appropriate to their local context.

A7. Like many other UWC national committees, Cambodia UWC national committee is composed of Cambodian UWC alumni who graduated from one of the UWC schools. The work they do in the committee is entirely voluntary.

A8. Student safety is a priority for all of our schools and colleges. Staff work closely with students to create a safe community based on shared respect.

Q9. What support is available to students at school or college?
A9. The majority of the schools and colleges have full or part-time nurses on site, or on-call, for any health problems students might encounter. Some also have counsellors on campus to support students’ academic and social wellbeing. Some UWC staff live on campus, or in student residences, and play an important role in pastoral care.

Q10. What is life like on campus?
A10. At many UWC colleges students live on campus, while a few schools have both day and residential students. Both types of schooling offer a stimulating learning environment. Through living and studying together, students are able to learn and understand other cultures.
Most schools and colleges are located in remote localities, which allow students to take advantage of the unique natural and social environments of the areas with minimal distraction to their study.

Q11. What support is available for students with disabilities?
A11. Some UWC colleges are better able to accommodate students with disabilities than others. This is because many are in historic buildings with limited accessibility, or isolated locations. Check individual college websites for more information. And get in touch with your relevant national committee, school or college, if you have any questions around this.

A14. For the past few years, we have used solely Google form for the application. This means students need to have a valid email address prior to applying. We no longer accept hard-copy application form.

Q16. What other supporting documents do I need to submit in addition to the application form?
A16. We require that candidates submit a copy of their school transcript as part of the application.
Additionally, candidates who are invited to participate in the subsequent stages of the selection process are required to provide one of these documents in order to verify their real birth dates: official birth certificate (copy or original), family book (copy or original), or national ID card.
Please note that the national committee does not evaluate students’ financial background until the last round of the selection process where parents or guardians of finalists will be asked to complete a financial assessment.

Q17. Can Cambodian students apply directly to UWC schools and colleges?
A17. Over 80% of students selected through the UWC national committee system are offered some level of financial assistance, on the basis of each individual's financial needs, which are assessed via a financial assessment. If you require a grant or scholarship, you should apply using this route.
Students may apply through the UWC Global Selection Programme (GSP), which is designed for those applicants who:
- are not eligible for or wish to forgo financial assistance
- are looking to attend a specific school or college
There are currently 18 UWC schools and colleges that offer admission through the Global Selection Programme. No scholarships are available through this route and places are limited. You can find more information about school fees here.
Through the GSP, you can apply for entry to a single school, to up to three schools, or to any school (no preference).

Q19. How many rounds are there in this selection process? And what should candidates expect in each round?
A19. Generally, there are three additional selection rounds after the application form. From year to year, the national committee may change how candidates are tested, but usually, the selection rounds involve different activities including written English and Math tests, group work and discussions, as well as individual and group interviews.
In some cases, candidates may be asked to write a few additional short essays in either Khmer or English language during one of the selection rounds.

Q20. How many months does it take from the application date to the result announcement?
A20. We try to release the results as soon as we could. From our experience, it can take up to five months from the release of applications until the official results are confirmed by UWC colleges.
Selection result announcements are sent via email to all finalists, including successful and unsuccessful candidates after the last round of the selection process.

A21. We try to announce the result for each round as soon as possible. We will send an invitation via email to all the candidates selected for each subsequent round of the selection at least one week before the start of that round.

Q22. What is the candidate eligibility for this scholarship?
A22. In order to be eligible for the scholarships, candidates must meet all the following requirements:
- Be a Cambodian nationality
- Be in grade 11-12 for the 2-year scholarships / grade 7-8 for the 5-year scholarships
- Meet the age requirement* by each scholarship provided in that given year
*Age requirements for 2-year scholarships by UWC colleges are usually between 16 to 18 years old. However, some colleges may require students with a slightly different age range for visa purposes. Specific information about the age requirement for each year will be posted in the scholarship announcement on our website and Facebook page.

A23. Thank you for your interest. Unfortunately, this scholarship opportunity is only for students studying in high school only.

A26. We do not have any specific recommendations for students to prepare themselves for this scholarship. However, from our experience as a national committee, we notice that students who are successful in this scholarship tend to have a good understanding of local and global issues, have the ability to present their ideas in a confident and respectful manner, be able to work well in a group, in addition to being competent in academic subjects such as Khmer language/literature, English, and Math.

Q27. How many UWC scholarships are there for Cambodia each year?
A27. In the last several years, we’ve received an average of 3 scholarship offers each year, some full and some partial. However, the number of scholarship offer may change depending on funding available at each UWC colleges. We do not know in advance which of the UWC schools and colleges will offer scholarships to Cambodia until the offers are made.

Q28. Are all of these fully-funded scholarships? Are there any partial scholarships?
A28. All UWC scholarships to Cambodia are need-based. It is likely that at least one or two of the scholarships received offer up to 100% scholarship for Cambodian students to attend UWC. However there are partial scholarship in the mix as well.

Q29. How do I know if I am selected for a partial or full scholarship?
A29. All UWC scholarships to Cambodia are need-based. The national committee nominates each successful candidate for the scholarship based on their selection performance evaluation and their family’s financial ability to each offered UWC college. The final decision will be made by the college.

Q30. Can I choose which college I/my child go to?
A30. In the final round of the selection, students are asked to indicate which of the scholarships offered that year is their top or preferred choice. The national committee will further assess if their preferred choice is really the best fit for them and the school. This means the students who are selected for the scholarship may not actually end up going to their preferred school.

A31. In the final round of the selection process, we will conduct an individual interview with the parents/guidance of the finalist to understand and assess their financial ability to contribute.

Q32. What do the scholarships cover?
A32. It depends on the individual offer, but usually, the scholarship covers tuition, fees, room and board. The scholarship may also include expenses for Project Week activities, travel and pocket money.

Q33. Are there any costs that I still have to pay for even with a full scholarship?
A33. Students may need to pay for their visa, airfare (to college and during holiday periods such as winter and summer breaks). Moreover, students need to expect costs on personal expenses (e.g. clothes, shampoos, personal activities with friends such as having dinner or going to a movie, etc.).

Q34. For partial scholarship, when does my family need to pay the fees after I get accepted?
A34. Each college has its own payment schedule. You will receive information about this from your national committee when you are offered a place at a UWC school or college.

Q35. I am currently in grade 11. If I get offered this scholarship, can I wait to finish my high school first?
A35. Students who are offered the scholarship in a given year are expected to attend the school in the fall (usually end of August) of that year.
In the past, we have a number of Cambodian students who received UWC scholarships when they were in grade 11, and they were able to keep their names registered in their school system so that they could sit the national high school exam when they returned to Cambodian during their UWC summer holiday.
In a few rare cases, the Cambodia UWC national committee may be able to negotiate with a UWC school to allow the nominated student to defer his/her attendance at the school until the following year, only if the student encounters serious visa or health problems that are beyond the student, the national committee, and/or the school’s ability to fix before the academic year starts.

Q36. If I get offered this scholarship, at what grade will I begin?
A36. All of the successful candidates for the 2-year UWC scholarship will start with grade 11. Successful candidates for 5-year UWC South East Asia scholarship will start with grade 8.

A37. For faster response, candidates can post their queries on our Facebook Messenger, which is open 24/7.
Alternatively, candidates can send their questions to selection@kh.uwc.org. Due to the high volume of emails received during the selection period, our response time will take longer.
The national committee does not have official phone contact, and we strongly encourage interested candidates to send us their queries using either one of the channels above.
